A former NSW police officer has been charged with perjury.

A NSW Police Media statement on Sunday said the offence was in relation to a sexual assault case heard in the Wollongong District Court in February 2020, with the Professional Standards Command launching an investigation in 2021.

Police have since charged a former detective senior constable with giving false evidence under oath amounting to perjury.

The 48-year-old man is due to appear before the Wollongong Local Court on 19 June, with investigations said to be continuing.
