You can never have enough markets and a new community-driven event launching in September will see profits returned to the not-for-profit organisers, the Alstonville Wollongbar Chamber of Commerce and the Alstonville Agricultural Society.
The aim of the new ‘Alstonville Community Market’ is to better connect local buyers with sellers and generate returns for local charities and will be held the first Sunday of the month at the Alstonville Show Ground.
Best way for producers and consumers to deal directly
Show Society President Zac Convery said in tough economic times, markets were the best way for producers and consumers to deal directly, keeping profits in the local community.
‘Whether you’re a farmer, an artist or a craftsperson, the market means buyers can talk face-to-face with sellers and haggle a fair price, with no profits being creamed off and sent to big multinational corporations.’
The plateau chamber Vice President Jemma Coulter said profits generated by the Alstonville Market would stay in the community, with both the chamber and show society being not-for-profit organisations.
‘From the start our plan has been to use the market as a chance to generate funds to support local charities and also give service clubs the chance to raise money on the day – they make such a difference in our community and really need more support right now’, said Ms Coulter.
A big demand for car boot-style market
‘We know there’s been big demand in the region for a monthly car boot-style market since the former Lismore event folded and we think Alstonville is the logical place to have it, being centrally located and having a fantastic all-weather undercover space at the show ground.’
Ms Coulter said organisers are keen to hear from people interested in selling their goods. ‘As well as the undercover spaces we will have room for people who want to drive in and sell straight from the back of their vehicle or the ute tray, to make it easy and give that genuine “car boot” market experience.
‘We’ve already had strong interest from great local food vendors – there’ll be music and a jumping castle for the kids, so it’s sure to be a fun day out for all.’
