
Last night saw the launch of the Byron Bay Surf Festival with the screening of George Greenough’s surf film ‘Innermost Limits of Pure Fun’ and today got underway with the Inaugural SurfAid Women’s Cup.
This will see four teams compete in a surf tag format battling it out for the first-ever SurfAid Women’s Cup. This will be followed by SurfAid presentations at the Beach Hotel and a number of events at the Beach Hotel and the BBSF art show at AMcTavish Store.
The blokes and mermaids will head out to the waves on Saturday for the logging competition that will see 32 blokes and 24 mermaids who have been invited to show of their skills. This will be followed by The Old Mal – surfers ride boards made pre-1968 and the U-18 girls and boys events.
Sunday will see the return of the McTavish Trim event that will showcases nine of the best men and nine of the best women longboard surfers in Australia – household names like Josie Prendergast, Elise Trigger, Jared Mell, Josh Williams and Matt Chojnacki. In addition to the McTavish Trim, legendary shaper Maurice Cole will host an ‘Icons of Surf’ heat featuring some legends of the sport including local shredder Danny Wills, Neal Purchase Jnr, Brad Gerlach, Pauline Menczer, Rusty Miller, Bob McTavish and the big bear himself.
