Severe weather warning for Northern Rivers Monday 12 August 2024 PiC SES

UPDATE, 1.30pm: An earlier severe weather warning has been changed to the official category of ‘advice’.

The Bureau of Meteorology was still forecasting heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding for the Northern Rivers as of 10.45am, State Emergency Services said.

The rain was expected to ease this afternoon as a low pressure trough weakened.

People in Lismore, Byron Bay, Ballina, Evans Head, Yamba and Maclean were still advised to monitor weather conditions, which could change unexpectedly, the SES said.

Earlier advice warning of possible minor flooding in the Rous, Tweed, Wilsons and Richmond River catchments was still in place, with another update due at 5.30pm.

EARLIER: State Emergency Services is asking people to monitor conditions ahead of forecast continued heavy rainfall on the Northern Rivers as part of a severe weather warning.

The advice comes after the agency warned of possible minor flooding today in the Richmond, Wilsons, Tweed and Rous River catchments.

The official rain advice at 6.13am Monday applied to Lismore, Byron Bay, Ballina, Evans Head, Yamba and Maclean.

Minor flood advice alerts across region

Earlier minor flood advice alerts issued on Sunday were still in effect and applied to the following areas in the Tweed Shire:

  • Tyalgum
  • Numbinbah
  • Murwillumbah
  • Tumbulgum
  • Chinderah
  • Burringbar Creek
  • Crabbes Creek

A minor flood advice alert still in place for the Wilsons River catchment in the Lismore local government area applied to:

  • Lismore
  • Nimbin
  • The Channon
  • Terania Creek
  • Upper catchment and surrounding communities

A minor flood advice alert was also in effect for Coraki and Bungawalbyn.

Predicted rain details

The Bureau of Meteorology said a trough of low pressure with a moist and unstable airmass had triggered deep and persistent showers, with rain expected to continue until this afternoon but unexpected changes possible.

Heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding was forecast with six-hourly rainfall totals between 40 to 80 mm likely.

Isolated totals of up to 150 mm was possible.

Stay safe

The SES was advising people in impacted areas to:

  • avoid unnecessary travel, move indoors and bring children and pets along;
  • park cars under secure cover and away from trees, powerlines and drains;
  • secure or put away items, such as outdoor furniture, trampolines and roofing iron that could blow around in strong winds;
  • grab emergency kits in case of power loss or need to leave home.

Stay informed

Local governments on the Northern Rivers including the Tweed, Byron, Ballina and Lismore local governments have emergency dashboards on their websites with access to all related information and agencies, including most services listed below from the SES.
