A rally has been called for this Saturday at Tyagrah Beach at 10am – at the formerly clothes optional beach – to call for a clothes option beach (COB) area for Byron Shire.
The existing COB has been closed by National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) after 25 years and the Byron Shire Council (BSC) has only asked police to ‘be more lenient toward nude bathers’ and not supported looking for an alternative site for a COB.
‘We just want somewhere that we can go to be able to enjoy the beach in a natural state,’ Bradley Benham told The Echo.
‘We have tried to have a discussion with NPWS and BSC and we have got nowhere. It would be lovely to see an area like Belognil Beach [the unofficial nude bathing beach for generations] as a COB or any beach 200m from the access for example South Brunswick, North Wall, South Golden Beach having a COB.’
Some supporters of the COB have highlighted that an area like the beach at The /wreck in Byon to the left of Main Beach could be considered as there woudl be safety in the number of people present and easy access by the police if there were issues.
Cheeky coverup
The Northern Rivers NAturists have met with police who have said that they will respond to complaints recieve about nudity on the beach.
‘We met with police on Tuesdayand they told us that they are already getting complaints about the rally and they will ask people to cover up,’ said Bradley.
‘They will issue fines to anyone with exposed genitals and tell them to cover up, if you don’t cover up at that point you will be issued a court appearance notice. With this in mind we ask everyone to please cover your genitals! Have fun with it.’
Pop on a sock, dress up Johnny and Whatnot and get creative with how you present yourself on this not nude beach said organisers.
‘Police will attend the complaints they will receive. Police keep records of all complaints, if they find no nudity further nuisance calls will get a low priority response,’ said orgaisers.
‘So be polite to police, they’re just doing their job. Don’t engage with counter-protesters and let’s show NPWS and BSC the huge demand for a legal clothes optional beach in Byron Shire.’
