When asked to name their favourite Bangalow feature, one of the candidates in a live Byron Shire forum in 2021 said ‘the sign on the way out’ of town.
No doubt the reply gave attending voters something to take into account when voting for their local representatives that year and coincidentally, the candidate was unsuccessful.
Local government elections are again underway across NSW, with official Election Day scheduled to happen this Saturday 14 September.
Various community groups and representatives have been hosting meet the candidates forums throughout the Northern Rivers, including in the Byron Shire, where another hyper-local Bangalow event is planned for tonight.
Continuing a tradition started in recent years, The Bangalow Herald is hosting Bangalow Meet the Candidates at the Bangalow Bowlo Tuesday 10 September from 6-8pm.
The free event is a unique chance for members of the Bangalow community to engage with local election candidates and make informed voting decisions but if the affectionately-known ‘Bangers’ – or do you prefer ‘Bangas’? – holds a special place in your heart, be sure to show up and let council candidates know.
Bay FM and Echo Publications journalist Mia Armitage is to moderate a question and answer session live on stage after very brief introductory campaign statements from group leaders, most of whom are also mayoral candidates.
A small but diverse group of Bangalow community representatives are to have their questions heard, including youth, while The Bangalow Herald is also at the ready with a list of their own, inspired by years of direct engagement in Bangalow affairs.
This year a special quick-fire random question-out-of-the-hat segment is to feature, with candidates named below-the-line on voting ballots invited to participate.
Whether any will reveal themselves to have strong disinterest in the town like the surprising candidate nearly three years ago remains to be heard – and as for the identity of that one, you’ll have to speak to someone else who was there, suffice to say they’re not running this time around.
Pizza and other refreshments may be purchased and enjoyed until the kitchen closes.
Organisers say everyone is welcome to stay after the official event, share a drink responsibly (there are plenty of non and low alcoholic options available at the bar) and have an informal chat with mayoral candidates and their teams as well as other candidates.
