Recently, The New York Times reported on anal rape and torture in the Sde Teiman interrogation centre. Eight former inmates described how they were forced to sit 18 hours a day in diapers and were beaten if they fell asleep. Younis al-Hamlawi, was lifted onto a metal rod which penetrated his anus causing immense pain. Heated rods and electric batons were also used causing at least one death; 35 have died at the hands of their Israeli torturers who were rounded up and held in custody. Throngs of angry protesters, including politicians, stormed the base and released them (The Times of Israel, 19/9/2024).
Despite the evidence of rape, torture, infanticide, genocide and now, in another blatant violation of international law, when communication devices exploded injuring thousands, Australia abstained from the UN vote calling for an end to the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine. Penny Wong said it was ‘disappointing’ that 124 nations supported it. Australia is complicit with Israeli genocide!
