There was no mayoral election in the Tweed Shire as elected councillors are responsible for choosing the mayor – this election will take place later today at the Tweed Council offices in Murwillumbah.
The newly-elected group of Tweed Shire Councillors will elect a new Mayor at an Extraordinary Meeting which will broadcast live this afternoon.
The meeting will take place from 3.30 pm in the Council Chambers at the Murwillumbah Civic Centre, 10 – 14 Tumbulgum Street, Murwillumbah.
Under the NSW Local Government Act 1993, election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor must take place within three weeks of the declaration of an ordinary election, with the newly-elected Mayor to serve a two-year term.
Councillors will decide at the meeting whether to elect a Deputy Mayor or not – and the length of that term (one or two years) – should they support the position of Deputy.
