Blue-green algae. Photo supplied.

As the weather warms so does the water and Lake Ainsworth has a green alert for blue-green algae.

This means that there is an increase of algae with an increase slicks and scums that should be avoided when present as they are areas of concentrated algae and may present a health risk.

There were two saples take at Lake Ainsworth of November 5 with total Cyanophyta B9 cells/mL at 1,200 and the other at 360. An Amber Level Alert Mode is triggered when Microcystis aeruginosa concentrations are between 5000 and 50,000 cells/mL or the biovolume of all cyanobacteria is between 0.4 and 4mm3/L.

‘There are currently no restrictions on the recreational use of the Lake but users should obey all signage erected by Council,’ stated a press release from Ballina Shire Council.

At this level routine sampling for algae should be undertaken.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. This is what happens with overdevelopment of Lennox and they are now building for more tourism and development! Say goodbye to what locals loved and were happy to let be. Lennox is now extremely screwed . It can’t handle the over development the exploitation or the tourists it was never like this. City people they just don’t get it. Come here and ruin it for evermore and say you pay homage to the First Nations. Generations of locals did not treat Lennox like you are. Leave it alone. No more developments no more concrete no more fences signs etc. Or go back to the city where you don’t have to live with country and what is natural and once our peaceful beautiful country towns.
