Nearly 2,500 square metres of concrete has been poured in preparation for work building Lismore’s new $3.9 million skatepark, the Lismore City Council reports.

Lismore Mayor Steve Krieg says the skate park will be a game-changer for young people who will no longer have to travel to Goonellabah to skate.

Councillor Krieg says the new park is to be built to host national and international competitions.

The facility is to feature so-called ‘street’ and ‘park’ sections, a covered mini ramp, and a rail paying tribute to the late Travis Watson, who was an avid skater, mentor and skating advocate in Lismore and the wider community.

Labor State Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin says the state government is fully funding the $3.9 million project under Round 2 of the Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. If half of the people in Lismore, aged between age 10 and 30, skated (ok, a little optimistic) there would be about 5,000 skaters. I just hope they all make good use of the skatepark as each one has cost about $750.

  2. We have been in crises since the flood with poor access to Lismore on appalling roads. The people who live here and spend there money here have been treated badly. We already had great sporting facility’s and will soon have the Lismore to Casino rail trail open. This money would have been better spent giving us locals better access . The town looks dead with all the fenced off and decaying houses and empty shops.
