The General Insurance Code Governance Committee has announced that it has selected registered charity Northern Rivers Community Gateway as the beneficiary of a $50,000 community benefit payment from an insurer which did the wrong thing.
The Gateway provides a range of services for people who are struggling in and around Lismore and the wider Northern Rivers.
The General Insurance Code Governance Committee is an independent body that monitors and enforces insurers’ compliance with its Code of Practice. The organisation says the community benefit payment came from an insurer as part of a sanction which was issued in June 2024 for serious breaches of the code.
Community benefit payments offer tangible support to communities, in addition to reinforcing accountability for insurers and strengthening trust in the regulatory oversight of the industry.
Returning benefits to the community
The Committee says it invited a wide range of organisations to be considered for the payment, deciding on a shortlist of the best candidate charities based on their work and impact. Northern Rivers Community Gateway was selected as the recipient for its community programs and activities in several communities.
The organisation is dedicated to grass-roots welfare support and capacity building services for disadvantaged people and communities in Lismore and northern NSW.
It has undertaken extensive work supporting communities affected by the devastating floods of 2022.
