The Bureau of Meteorology is warning of thunderstorms and possible hail across a large area of eastern Australia today, including the Northern Rivers of NSW and southeast Queensland.
Forecaster Jonathan How is predicting severe thunderstorms north of Newcastle. ‘This include places like Coffs Harbour, Kempsey, Lismore, Byron Bay and Tweed and inland to places like Tamworth and Narrabri.’
He says heavy rainfall, damaging winds and large hail are all possibilities. ‘These hazards can generate things like localised flash flooding, damage to property and trees and disruptions to roads and transport. Not all thunderstorms will generate these hazards, though.’
Mr How says heatwave conditions are expected to return to places such as Alice Springs, Birdsville and the Darling Downs in coming days.
He says the Bureau expects to generate more specific thunderstorm warnings later, with the forecast situation complicated locally by a cold front and surface trough moving up along the NSW coast, generating showers and storms over the next few days.
