Police say they’ve charged a man after an alleged robbery at a jewellery store at Tweed Heads South on Friday.
Officers were called to a shopping centre on Minjungbal Drive at Tweed Heads South around 11am Friday in response to reports of a robbery.
Police were told upon arrival that a man had entered the shop carrying a small bottle of fuel.
He is alleged to have poured the fuel onto the shop counter before demanding jewellery and then fleeing with jewellery and cash.
Police say there was no fire lit, and no physical injuries reported.
Members of the public, including two off-duty Queensland police officers, are said to have chased and arrested the man as he tried to enter a vehicle on Minjungbal Drive.
The vehicle, a red Hyundai i30 hatchback with QLD plates, is believed to have been driven by a woman and was last seen heading west along Machinery Drive at Tweed Heads South.
Meanwhile, police say they took the 28-year-old man to Tweed Heads Police Station, where he was charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon.
Police say he was refused custody and spent the night behind bars before he was due to appear at Lismore Local Court on Saturday.
