The World Championship Mullet Throwing competition is set to be played out this weekend in Ocean Shores, with competitors flexing their fish arms in the hopes of taking home a championship win.
The traditional Ocean Shores Community Association (OSCA) event, with an Aussie sing-a-long, is part of the annual January 26 celebrations. OSCA President, Jan Mangleson, said the idea started in 2005. ‘That year, there was a big mullet kill in Waterlily Park. It was because there was too much oxygen, and the poor old mullet were floating dead on the top of the lake.

‘When we looked into it we found out that the mullet live in all the Ocean Shores lakes – every lake on the golf course had them.
‘We realised how important they were so we decided to celebrate them by having the mullet throw.’
Mrs Mangleson said the day is just a fun family thing to do. ‘And we highlight mullets.’
There will be great family activities on the day and snacks and drinks – a giant lamington, and entertainment from Morris Cronin and of course the traditional rubber mullets, with junior boys and girls, and men and women championships.
The Mullet Throw be held at the Ocean Shores Public School from 3pm on Sunday – everyone is welcome. Enquiries can be made by calling or texting 0431 477 445.
