A search was initiated around midday on Saturday, January 11 following reports of two persons requiring assistance in the ocean at Evans Head, south of Ballina.
A Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance to search for and assist the two people reported requiring assistance, however, after a search of the area no persons were sighted and the aircraft search was called off by NSW Ambulance paramedics on the ground.
NSW averages six coastal drowning deaths during the month of December over the past five years with that average almost met in the last ten days of December with five coastal drownings.
There have also been several local incidents with near drownings at South Golden Beach as swimmers have become caught in rips.
BEACH SAFETY TIPS
- Always swim between the red and yellow patrol flags, for your nearest patrolled beach check the BeachSafe app or website
- Read the safety signs for information about the beach and ask a lifesaver or lifeguard for safety information
- Always swim with someone else so you can look out for each other, and always supervise children around the water
- Never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- If you need help in the water, stay calm and attract attention by raising one arm
- In an emergency, dial Triple Zero
