State fire authorities have issued a reminder about the risks of lithium-ion batteries, which they say is one of the fastest growing fire risks in NSW.
‘Don’t charge phones on your pillow or in bed,’ NSW Fire and Rescue said in the alert, ‘only charge devices on hard surfaces’.
Authorities say to never leave devices on charge for extended periods such as overnight, or unattended, and to switch off once fully charged.
People are advised to only charge e-bikes, e-scooters, and power tools in garages or sheds, away from living areas and exit doors.
Only chargers that comply with relevant standards and have been supplied with, or deemed compatible with, your battery or device should be used.
NSW Fire and Rescue says to buy products from reputable brands and suppliers and to never use or charge batteries or equipment showing signs of damage such as swelling, leaking, discolouration, or odours.
