
NSW Planning Minister Paul Scully has declared as state significant a development proposal in Kingscliff said to include affordable housing.
The minister’s latest declaration of State Significant Developments includes a project proposal submitted in response to an Expressions of Interest in February.
The applicant wants to build a mixed residential and commercial complex ‘with provision of affordable housing’ at 4-8 Bells Boulevard, Kingscliff, the declaration signed 14 April reads.
The project is one of fourteen listed as state significant, most of them in/around Sydney and five in the regions.
Tweed Shire already has over 20,000 lots approved and waiting to be built. The issue is getting the approved developments built as local councils have very few levers to pull to push developers, who are land,banking, to acutually build their approved developments.
Approval for more than 32,000 new homes, says Scully
Minister Scully has issued five declarations of State Significant Developments so far this year, with a total of 78 projects listed.
Many are for shop-top housing, with some mixed-use and medium density projects also listed such as flats, provisions for affordable housing and some build-to-rent projects.
The minister says they equate ‘to more than 32,100 potential homes’ and that fifteen have had Secretary Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEAR) issued since the introduction of a Housing Delivery Authority under Labor.
State Significant Developments don’t require all the usual local government approvals, instead gaining approval directly from the state’s planning department with the help of SEARs.
