What is the future of Ballina Shire? Photo supplied

New SES Headquarters and an upgrade to the Alstonville Cultural Centre are among some of the larger projects that Ballina Shire Council (BSC) is looking to undertake as well as proposing a Special Rate Variation (SRV) to move ahead with their general infrastructure plans.

They are currently seeking community feedback on a range of draft strategic docuemnts and the proposed SRV as they determine how to maintian infrastructure and community assets in the Ballina Shire.

The draft documents currently available for comment are:

  • Community Strategic Plan
  • Delivery Program and Operational Plan
  • Long Term Financial Plan and Budget
  • Fees and Charges Schedule
  • Workforce Management Plan
  • Asset Management Strategy.

Ballina Council is looking at a major capital works program and key projects include the new Ballina SES Headquarters, a $16 million upgrade of the Alstonville Cultural Centre, completion of the new pump track at Kingsford Smith Reserve, flood resilience works on Ross Lane, and progress toward duplicating the Fishery Creek and Canal Bridges in Ballina.

Mayor Sharon Cadwallader is encouraging the community to get involved, learn more about the plans, and have their say.

‘These draft plans reflect our commitment to maintaining core infrastructure and services while managing financial pressures responsibly,’ said Cr Cadwallader.

SRV

The SRV proposal is seeking a gradual increase to general rate income over four years (2026/27 to 2029/30) that would allow BSC to increase investment in roads, footpaths, stormwater, sports fields, community facilities, and operational services.

‘We have been careful with our budget, but to keep things running and plan for the future, we are looking at a gradual rate increase,’ said Cr Cadwallader.

‘Ballina’s average residential rates are currently about 11 per cent below similar councils, and even further below our neighbours. This proposal would help bring us closer to that level, making sure we don’t fall behind in funding essential infrastructure and services.’

Residents can view the draft documents, submit feedback, and ask questions at YourSayBallina.com.au. The site includes a detailed Q&A and an opportunity to ask questions, with responses published online to support community understanding.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
