The junior Byron Bay Boardriders (BBB) won at their first attempt in the Alley Boardriders tag team event at Currumbin over the Anzac Day weekend.
‘It was an amazing win,’ BBB junior contest director, Marc Smith, told The Echo.
‘It has happened naturally, but we have a group coming through who are really very good, they are elite for their age’.
The contest follows the same format as the senior Australia Boardriders Battle, but is for juniors.
‘The team surfed three times on Sunday, April 27 at Currumbin against the best young surfers of North Coast NSW and Queensland,’ Marc said. ‘Progressing to the final, they won by a convincing ten point margin’.
‘It was the first time we have entered this competition, and it is a new format for our surfers, so we had a practice session. It involves tactics, decision-making and there are bonus points available,’ Marc said.
The local surfers topped a field of roughly 20 clubs who came from Coffs Harbour up to Noosa.
