The Mullumbimby Brunswick Valley Football Club (MBVFC) has got the 2025 season underway in emphatic style, after a stunning win in the premier league pre-season Anzac Cup knock-out competition, their first piece of top-flight silverware in 75 years.
‘The whole club is over the moon, and at a personal level for all involved, it’s a marvellous achievement. The top men’s side has never got to a semi-final, let alone winning the final,’ said coach Beau Savage.
Fourth place
The MBVFC team qualified in fourth place, and was able to beat South Lismore in the semi in the last minutes of extra time via and own goal.
This set up the Anzac Day clash with the Bangalow Bluedogs, who won both last season’s pre-season competition and the major premiership.
In the team’s previous meeting with Bangalow this year, the Bluedogs went home winners 4-1, so the MBVFC team knew they had a lot to overcome, including banishing some doubt.
It was a ‘thrilling’ contest said Beau, with his side playing really well for periods. Good enough to go two-nil up in 25 minutes, before conceding the same to leave it level at half time.
‘We had a good chat and decided to double-down on attack,’ he said.
First goal
The team got the first goal, but soon conceded another, but before doubts could linger about letting Bangalow back into the game, again, the side kept its attacking focus and finished the game 5-3 in front, and completely elated.
‘At the beginning of the season we thought about going down a grade to build confidence as we finished eighth out of ten,’ said Beau. ‘But to win like that, from where we were last year, it’s a world apart’. The side has picked up some additional players, particularly with more experience, but there has been a solid set up in the side for five of six years.
Beau has been with the club two years. ‘I came in at just the right time,’ he said.
