Emergency services were called to Cabarita Beach yesterday afternoon after a 16-year-old boy was bitten by a shark.
The surfer was reportedly seriously injured on the right arm and leg, with bystanders stemming the flow of blood before emergency services arrived.
Social media reports a seal was also seen in the area earlier, along with another shark sighting, but the exact species involved in this attack is unknown, with helicopter spotters being unable to see the shark.
The teenager was flown to Gold Coast University Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, where his condition has been described as ‘serious but stable’.
The beach remains closed today, with whale migrations attracting extra sharks to the area.
