Mission Australia is putting out the final call for young people to share their thoughts on the issues impacting Australia in the charity’s annual Youth Survey which closes on August 15.
The youth Survey collects responses from young people nationwide aged 14-19. In 2024, more than 3,500 NSW young people completed the survey, naming cost of living (55 per cent), mental health (28 per cent) and climate change and the environment (24 per cent) as the top issues in Australia.
The survey hopes young people will open up about their aspirations and give an insight into their lived experience.
Mission Australia State Director NSW/ACT Di Kapera said young people should take the opportunity to be heard. ‘The Youth Survey gives us a direct line to young people.
‘Having this unique insight into young people’s concerns and lived experience allows us to advocate on their behalf. The data also informs the work we do across our programs and services to support young people to thrive.
Top concern the cost of living
‘In 2024, cost of living was the top concern for young people in NSW as they and their families felt the impact of rising rents and the high cost of everyday essentials.
‘With many individuals and families across the state still struggling to find a safe and secure home that they can afford, we expect to see similar results this year.’
Ms Kapera says the results of the Youth Survey are published in November and shared with schools, the non-profit sector and all levels of government to influence and inform policies, services and programs that support and affect young people.
‘I hope that parents, schools, and local community groups can spread the word about the Youth Survey and help us to hear from a diverse group of young people.’
The survey focuses on a wide range of topics, and includes questions on mental health and wellbeing, sources of support and community connections, housing and financial situation, climate change, study and work and hopes for the future. In 2025, for the first time, 14-year-olds were able to participate in the survey.
Youth Survey 2025 will close on August 15. To take part in the survey, go to www.missionaustralia.com.au/youthsurvey.
