Deadly weaving at Lismore gallery

Eighteen months ago, a group of First Nations artists from the Northern Rivers came together at the Lismore Regional Gallery as part of the Gathering Space project.

Police on Friday said they’d arrested another six people including a teenager as part of investigations into an alleged affray they believe is linked to a man’s death in Goonellabah last month.

A seventh man, arrested on 20 November, was due to face court today on related charges.

Emergency services were called to Fischer Street in Goonellabah around 6.20am on Friday 7 November in response to the discovery of a man’s body on a nearby walking track.

The body was revealed to be that of a 25-year-old man and officers started investigating the case as a homicide.

Police link head injuries to body and brawl

His discovery happened three and a half hours after the admission of a 31-year-old man to Lismore Base Hospital with serious head injuries.

Police said he was later airlifted to the Gold Coast University Hospital and but had since been released.

Detectives soon said they believed the two men were involved in an alleged brawl in Goonellabah’s Clifford Park in the early hours of Friday 7 November.

They arrested a 23-year-old man in Lismore on 20 November and charged him with two counts of armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, affray, reckless wounding in company, and possessing an unauthorised firearm.

He had received conditional bail and was due to appear before the Lismore Local Court Monday 1 December.

Knives, bats, gelblaster and bow seized from G’bah home

In the meantime, detectives last Thursday 27 November arrested another five men aged between 18 and 27, as well as a 17-year-old boy, at a Goonellabah home.

The arrests happened as part of a search warrant execution in which police reported seizing of a range of weapons including knives, bats, a gel blaster firearm, and a compound bow.

Three of the men were charged with affray, and reckless wounding in company.

A 22-old man faced the same charges, as well as wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two counts of being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

A 27-year-old man was also charged with affray, reckless wounding in company and being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The five men were refused bail and due to have their first appearances before Lismore Local Court on Friday 28 November.

The 17-year-old boy was charged with affray, and reckless wounding in company and later received strict conditional bail to appear before a children’s court on 11 December.

Police said their investigations were continuing.

A critical incident investigation into the actions of police in responding to the incident was also still continuing.
