On 30 December many beaches between Byron and Ballina were closed due to rough seas. Not at Broken Head (except for a short shark alarm).
Parking was at a premium with cars parking along the entry road nearly back to the coast road. Byron Council decided to have a parking blitz that can only be described as a cynical exercise in revenue raising.
Pay parking was implemented earlier in December however there had been no improvements in providing formal parking areas or sealed shoulders on the entry road. Given these circumstances one can only guess that the issue of hundreds of parking fines was purely to raise revenue without any thought to improving the situation in the customary peak holiday period. I can only suggest to holiday makers, forget about Byron Council’s beaches and come to Ballina Shire where parking is free and the beaches are better!
