Diabetes is a chronic condition marked by high levels of glucose in the blood. It is caused by the inability of the body to produce or effectively use insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas to control blood glucose levels.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form. It involves a genetic component, but is largely preventable, and can be managed with changes to diet and physical activity, and with medications.
To help raise awareness of the condition and to offer some healthy advice, Lisa Strauss, an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD)
will be giving a series of free health talks, specifically on the prevention and management of Type 2 Diabetes and Heart Disease, for people aged 65 and over.
The talks are supported by Healthy North Coast and will be completely free to participants.
Healthy choices
Ms Strauss says the idea is to hold a space for people to discuss ways to incorporate healthy eating choices, share recipes, be given expert advice and to share a free afternoon.
‘The aim is to increase awareness in the prevention and management of chronic disease and increase social connectivity.’
The sessions will be held in two locations over an eight-week period at:
The Ocean Shores Country club every Thursday afternoon from 1.30 to 3.30pm, starting January, 29, to February 19.
The Ballina Indoor Sports Centre every Thursday afternoon 1.30 to 3.30pm starting February 26 to March 19.
