A long weekend is to be included in the calendar as part of this and next year’s Anzac Day commemorations in NSW.
The state’s Labor-led government made the announcement on Sunday.
Anzac Day is to fall on a Saturday this year, and in 2027 to fall on a Sunday.
‘This will not change,’ the government’s release read, ‘however there will be an additional public holiday this year and in 2027’.
Two days over the long weekend are to therefore be considered public holidays under the proposed change.
‘25 April will always remain the day of national commemoration,’ the government said,’dawn Services, marches and community ceremonies held on that day will continue to be the central focus of remembrance across NSW’.
The additional holiday on Monday reinforced the occasion’s importanceand significance as well as making it consistent with other major public holidays, the government said.
New Year’s Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day allowed for additional public holiday arrangements in place in NSW when the fell on a weekend.
The government said NSW had fewer public holidays than all other mainland states and territories.
The experience of the additional public holidays were to form part of a NSW Government review of the state’s public holidays that was due to start next year.
‘This review will look at whether the balance is right for workers, families and businesses, and whether there is a case for change going forward,’ Premier of New South Wales Chris Minns said in the media release.
