The NSW Labor Government says it’s looking into the possibility of reforms allowing Illegal e-bikes to be seized and crushed.
The government says it wants to stop the use of high-powered and doctored bikes that perform more like motorbikes than bicycles.
The government is proposing giving police expanded powers for the seizure and crushing of throttle-only, high-powered e-motorbikes.
The bikes are described by the government as fuelling anti-social behaviour, community frustration and serious injuries.
Portable so-called ‘dyno units’ that measure whether the power output of an e-bike is beyond the legal maximum are also being investigated as an option for police.
The government says Transport for NSW and NSW Police will be looking at simple seizure and disposal laws already in place in Western Australia and that further measures will be announced in coming weeks.
