Apparently it [Ben Roberts-Smith] is the first time that they investigated a potential war crime committed by someone while serving in the Australian Army in a foreign country.
I can imagine that it is not easy to deal with ‘the state within the state’. This must be the reason why it took so long before they laid charges.
It is good to restore the confidence of the Australian people to be able to trust their defence force again after years of doubt. We deserve to know what happened in Afghanistan and there have been too many years of uncertainty regarding the integrity of the Australian Army.
And it is good for the army too. If it is true that these alleged war crimes occurred, they can weed out the bad apples and thus come clean (well, sort of).
If not proven guilty, even better for them and at least it came to a (hopefully transparent) trial.
I am looking forward to it.
