Having reviewed the latest plans for the redevelopment of the old Mullumbimby hospital site, I was amazed to see that no staged, old-age facilities have been included.
The first main reason for this concern is that, because there are inadequate facilities in Mullumbimby and the surrounding area, some beds are being taken up in the Byron regional hospital by old people who have nowhere else to go.
This is surely a waste of the limited number of hospital beds and the nursing staff to maintain them.
The second reason is that there is a nursing home on part of the site which the current owner, the Catholic Church, was prepared to expand to cater for a staged aged care facility if it was included in the proposed redevelopment of the site.
If the balance of the site was developed to include low-cost houses, villas and units, the most important needs for accommodation in Mullum would be met.
If you agree with the inclusion of aged care facilities in the redevelopment of the Mullum hospital site, may I suggest you make it known to Council by making a submission to https://yoursay.byron.nsw.gov.au/dcp-mullum-hospital. Asap!
