Surf Life Clubs throughout NSW are to have new publicly accessible emergency kits for treating shark bites attached to their buildings.
Surf Life Saving NSW is to reveal the new kits at an official announcement in Dee Why, near Sydney, tomorrow.
Dee Why was the site of a fatal shark bite in 2025.
There 129 Surf Life Saving Clubs in NSW, including several on the Northern Rivers where other shark encounters leading to injury and death are recorded.
Surf Life Saving NSW has referred to a recent increase in fatal shark attacks over the past seven months, including several at the end of January.
The organisation says ‘preventative actions’ are needed along the state’s coastline, where at least one beach is reportedly closed every day owing to shark sightings.
The new emergency first aid trauma kits are to be attached to the external wall of each NSW surf club for anyone to use while they wait for emergency services in the event of a shark encounters, if there isn’t a lifeguard available at the club.
