Ballina Shire Council’s special rate variation approved

Local police say that over the past week (8-15 April 2026), 66 people were charged with a total of 84 criminal offences.

‘They are as follows:

• Domestic Violence (DV): Ten males and three females were charged with 24 domestic violence related offences, including charges for choking, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assaulting police, stalking/intimidating, intentionally recording intimate images, destroying property, and contravening apprehended violence orders.

• Traffic: 34 charges for traffic related offences, including police pursuits, driving while disqualified or suspended, and driving under the influence of drugs or with a prescribed concentration of alcohol (11).

• Property: eight charges for property offences, including break, enter and steal (3), shoplifting (4) and possessing goods suspected of being stolen.

• Drugs: 12 people charged for drugs, including for commercial supply and possessing prohibited drugs, and cultivating cannabis.

• Guns: Two persons were charged with firearms offences.

Significant Arrests:

• A 54-year-old male was charged for possessing a pistol while being subjected to a firearms prohibition order following a search of his residence. He will next appear at the Byron Bay Local Court on 13 July 2026.

• A 29-year-old male was charged for intentionally causing fire after allegedly setting fire to shrubland surrounding his property, resisting arrest and threatening to injure a police officer. He will next appear at the Murwillumbah Local Court on 22 April 2026.

• A 27-year-old male was charged by Tweed Water Police with allegedly operating a marine vessel negligently causing death after an incident on the Tweed River on 6 February 2026. None of the four males on board the vessel were wearing life jackets. Following a manoeuvre, three of the males were thrown into the water with one of the males being struck by the vessel causing severe injuries. He died a week later in hospital. Following a comprehensive investigation, the driver of the vessel was charged and will next appear at the Tweed Heads Local Court on 15 June 2026.

• A 24-year-old male was charged with various drug supply charges after being stopped by highway patrol officers on the Pacific Motorway at Billinudgel. The rear of the vehicle was searched with large vacuum-packed resealable bags being located containing 25.5 kilograms of cannabis. A search warrant was subsequently executed upon the males Sydney residence and a further 1 kilogram of cannabis and 1 kilogram of Methylamphetamine was located. This male was refused bail to next appear at the Tweed Heads Local Court on 12 June 2026.

• A 22-year-old male was charged with allegedly shoplifting and intimidating a retail worker at a Mullumbimby business, then behaving in an offensive manner, and resisting arrest. He was conveyed to hospital and allegedly continued kicking, screaming, and attempting to punch police. He will next appear at the Mullumbimby Local Court on 6 May 2026.

• A 35-year-old male was charged after allegedly breaking into a Chinderah business and stealing alcohol. He was arrested at the scene, the stolen items were recovered, and a search of his belongings located a large knife. He is due to appear at the Tweed Heads Local Court on 1 June 2026.

E-Bike Enforcement:

• Over the last 6 months, 208 legal actions were initiated for e-bike and bicycle related offences in the Tweed Byron Police District.

• Byron Bay, Tweed Heads, and the Tweed Coast continue to be the primary hotspots for detected offences.

• Helmet non-compliance was the dominant safety issue, representing over half of all detected offences.

• Local Police continue to attend local schools and community events, providing education concerning the safe use of e-bikes and bicycles’.
