Police are asking the public for help identifying three men captured on CCTV footage, allegedly involved in the theft of the national flag from the Byron Bay police station.
The footage was captured around 4:13am, Sunday 24 May, officers reporting on local social media said.
The three men were seen walking north along Butler Street, Byron Bay before briefly stopping outside the southern driveway of Byron Bay Police Station.
They are then described as continuing north along the footpath fronting the station.
‘While passing, the males directed their attention to the Australian National Flag mounted on the station flagpole,’ police reported.
Police CCTV captures man ‘gesturing’
‘One male approached the pole, lowered the flag, and removed it from its fittings,’ they said.
‘The two other males remained on the footpath, observing both the male and the police station entrance.’

The man who removed the flag is then said to have run north toward Shirley Street carrying it, while another man ‘gestured’ toward the police CCTV.

The trio left the area, headed in a northerly direction.

Anyone with information that may help police in their investigations is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online, with a reference number of E90345189.
