Northern Rivers residents will have a direct say in local disaster preparedness and recovery when public consultations launch on Friday, 5 June.
The NSW Reconstruction Authority says it is partnering with local communities to develop the state’s first multi-hazard Disaster Adaptation Plan (DAP) – a vital step in reducing the impact of future natural disasters and adapting to a changing climate.
This feedback will directly inform the creation of the Northern Rivers Foundation DAP – the first stage of the plan. This initial roadmap will be used to prioritise and analyse long-term risk reduction for the entire region.
Local knowledge invaluable
Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin said, ‘As someone who lives here and has stood alongside our community through our toughest days, I know that the best ideas for our protection come from the people who know this place best.
‘This is about our homes, our businesses, and our future. We’ve all seen the impact of natural hazards firsthand, and your lived experience is the most valuable tool we have to build a stronger Northern Rivers.
‘For too long, the focus across Australia has been on picking up the pieces after a disaster. We are changing that right here in our own backyard. By working together on this Disaster Adaptation Plan, we are switching the dial to better preparation and genuine risk reduction.
‘I encourage everyone to drop into a session or jump online. This is our chance to ensure the unique needs of our communities are at the very heart of how we adapt and thrive.’
Community drop-in sessions
Northern Rivers residents can learn more about the disaster risk in their region and share their ideas to reduce risk either online or in-person at seven free community drop-in sessions:
- Murwillumbah – Monday 15 June, 3pm-6pm: Civic and Cultural Centre Auditorium.
- Ballina – Wednesday 17 June, 3pm-6pm: Ballina Surf Club.
- Maclean – Thursday 18 June, 3pm-6pm: Rocky Mouth Pavillion, Maclean Showgrounds.
- Casino – Friday 19 June, 3pm-6pm: Casino Community and Cultural Centre.
- Kyogle – Tuesday 23 June 3pm-6pm: Kyogle Memorial Institute.
- Lismore – Wednesday 24 June, 3pm-6pm: Lismore Regional Gallery.
- Mullumbimby – Friday 26 June 3pm-6pm: Mullumbimby Civic Hall.
