Emergency services attended the scene where two people died after a car left the road and struck a tree near Chinderah.
Police say that around 6pm (Monday 4 May 2026), emergency services were called to the M1 Motorway near Chinderah Road, Chinderah, after reports of a crash.
‘Officers from Tweed-Byron Police District arrived to find that both the driver and the front-seat passenger had died at the scene after the vehicle crashed into a tree.
‘A crime scene has been established and an investigation by specialist officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit has commenced.
