In the vein of a speculative sci-fi, this comedy misadventure is simultaneously relatable, playful, hilarious, and unnerving. SAAM will be performed for three nights by Byron Bay High’s Year 11 Drama troupe on 23, 25 and 26 June from 6.30pm.
The exciting and thought-provoking play, by Australian playwright Madelaine Nunn, addresses what happens when technology is invited to step in and sort out our social lives.
‘The production immerses audiences in the worlds of gaming, social media and school-life from the perspective of socially-awkward protagonist Claire, who seems to be having trouble connecting IRL,’ said a spokesperson for the troupe.
‘That is, until SAAM, a Social Ally Android Machine is configured, based on Claire’s digital behaviour and profiles, enters her life and presents as her “shortcut to friendship”.’
Likened to a teen-appropriate Black Mirror-style storyline, SAAM is a colourful and high-energy production that explores connection, friendship, authenticity and identity through a storyline full of humour and futuristic chaos.
