The future of Lismore is now up for discussion, with Council’s Strategic Planning Framework currently out for public exhibition. Now is your time to have your say – consultation closes 26 June.
Council say, ‘This overarching framework is led by a new draft Local Strategic Planning Statement (LSPS). The draft LSPS sets a clear direction for Council, our community, and local businesses by proposing these major targets:
- ‘Growing the population to 60,000 people and beyond
- ‘Unlocking a pathway for up to 10,000 new houses to be delivered
- ‘Enabling 6,500 new jobs across a range of industries’.
They say, ‘These targets give Lismore a clear, collective vision to work towards. They have been carefully curated based on significant research and balanced with what you have told us you wanted over the past four years through various consultations and surveys.
‘These strategies are currently open for consultation and we need your feedback to ensure we get the balance right before they are finalised’.
Economic Development Strategy
‘The Economic Development Strategy sets out how Lismore will build a prosperous future by placing people and community at the centre of local economic development. Its purpose is to shape a dynamic and resilient economy which genuinely serves the community and ensures everyone can access opportunities through quality jobs, thriving local businesses and a strong, diverse economic base. The Strategy outlines a clear pathway for growing a fair, inclusive and resilient economy which enables people to live well and affordably in Lismore now and into the future. It supports Council’s long-term vision for locally anchored prosperity, community empowerment and shared economic benefit. It also provides a practical framework for coordinated action, investment and innovation across Council and its partners. The strategy put forward here is an update to the existing EDS’.
Rural Land Use Strategy 2026-2036 *new strategy
‘The purpose of this Rural Land Use Strategy is to support and enable vibrant and sustainable agricultural industries for a thriving rural community into the future. The Strategy aims to protect key agricultural land and natural capital resources, grow the rural economy and provide great places to live. It takes a future-focused approach that considers rural lifestyle values into the future and reflects the community’s needs. It encourages the next generation of rural living, local food production and promotes a sense of pride for rural industries, including agri- and eco-tourism.
Biodiversity Management Strategy 2026-2036
‘The Biodiversity Management Strategy (BMS) aims to provide a long-term framework for protecting and enhancing the unique biodiversity of the Lismore Local Government Area. The Strategy provided here is an update to the existing BMS and has been changed based on an extensive review.
Resilience and Adaptation Strategy 2026-2036 *new strategy
‘The Resilience and Adaptation Strategy provides a clear framework for making smart, climate-ready decisions and taking practical steps to protect our community. It also supports and empowers others – businesses, residents, and partners – to take their own adaptive actions. Because when we all act, we all become stronger. By weaving climate resilience and sustainability into everything we do – our policies, urban planning, and infrastructure projects – Lismore is leading the way toward a future that embraces resilience and innovation for a thriving community’.
