The 13th annual Senior Basketball Carnival was held last week, 11 to 13 September at Byron’s Cavanbah Sports Centre with teams attending from all over Australia.
There were plenty of teams returning to defend their titles, while others were here to try to take the trophy home themselves.
‘This year we had A & B men and women and for the first time added a Veterans division (ages 40+) ,’ said one of the organisers, Jenny Ogle.
‘This division brought together a lot of friends who haven’t been together for a long time. It was a great vibe, with lots of laughs and also lots of competitiveness.
‘There were 19 teams who played a total of 47 games over the weekend.
‘All finals were super exciting, especially the B-womens between Melbas on Tour and our local Byron Beez team, who ran neck and neck for 50 minutes and went into double overtime. The Melbas finally came out winners to take the trophy back to Melbourne (although they also had a couple of local ex-Beez players),’ Jenny told The Echo.

The winners were: A-Men – Behoys; B-men – Rusty Trombones; A-women – Rimshots; B-women – Melbas on Tour; and Veterans – Brisbane Masters.
‘A huge thanks to all our volunteers and sponsors including North Byron Hotel, Byron Bowlo, NC Trophies, IGA, Trevor Meads butchers, and Woolworths. Next year’s carnival is already in the planning,’ Jenny said.
