Nonnies – Something a little different

Tucked into the heart of Mullumbimby, Nonnie’s Wine Store is not your typical bottle shop. It’s a place for people who love good wine, good food and discovering something a little different.

Founded by locals Arnhem Bickley and Ryan Bettles, Nonnie’s was created with a simple idea: to bring together great wines from small, independent producers alongside the things you want to eat and share with them.

Wine is at the heart of Nonnie’s, with a strong focus on natural, organic and biodynamic producers. You’ll find wild fermented, minimal intervention, unfined and unfiltered wines, including plenty of wines with little or no added sulphur. The focus is on wines made with care, character and a real sense of place, often from small producers who are farming thoughtfully and doing things their own way.

But Nonnie’s is much more than wine.

The store also has a carefully selected deli range, with European and Australian cheeses, dried meats, chips, chocolates, preserves and all the little bits and pieces that make putting together a great platter easy. There’s an extensive collection of mezcal and tequila, along with whisky, craft beer and plenty of other interesting finds.

Supporting small producers, independent makers and local businesses is a big part of what Nonnie’s is about. You won’t find a store dominated by the big corporate brands. Instead, the shelves are filled with bottles and products the team genuinely love and believe are worth sharing.

And while natural wine is a big passion, you certainly don’t need to be a natural wine expert to walk through the door. Whether you’re looking for an easy drinking bottle for dinner, something chilled and juicy for the weekend, a special bottle to celebrate, or a $300 bottle for a very special occasion, there’s something here for everyone. Wines start from around $25, making the store accessible whether you’re discovering natural wine for the first time or adding something serious to your collection.

The team are always happy to have a chat, make recommendations and help you find something that suits your taste and your budget, without the wine snobbery.

Nonnie’s is about drinking differently, supporting the people who make things with passion and bringing good wine and good food back to the centre of the table.

So next time you’re in Mullumbimby, drop in, have a look around and discover something you didn’t know you were looking for.

Interview with Paul Bender

Few contemporary bands have reshaped the language of modern music like Hiatus Kaiyote. Formed in Melbourne in 2011, the quartet of Nai Palm (vocals, guitar), Paul Bender (bass), Simon Mavin (keys) and Perrin Moss (drums) has become one of Australia’s most celebrated musical exports, earning global acclaim for a sound that seamlessly bridges jazz, soul, funk, hip hop, electronic music and progressive composition.
