ShelterBox and its local partners are distributing emergency shelter materials and essential household items to people displaced by the Nepal floods. Supplied

The Rotary Club of Alstonville has raised $5,000 to support families in Nepal who have been displaced by recent flash floods.

The funds will go to ShelterBox Australia, which launched an emergency appeal to support people who have lost their homes. The nationwide charity is part of the global ShelterBox network specialising in emergency shelter for families affected by conflict or
disaster.

ShelterBox currently has a response team in Kathmandu working with Rotary and local partners to distribute tarpaulins, tents, solar lights and other essential household items.

The $5,000 was raised through a street collection at the Alstonville Plaza, online donations, and a contribution from an honorary club member.

Generous response

Rotarian Peter Swain said, ‘Given the shocking scenes we all witnessed in Nepal, we thought we had to do something to support those affected.

‘As always, the Plateau community responded generously and we’re confident that by supporting ShelterBox, the funds raised will assist those most in need in Nepal.’

ShelterBox Australia CEO Mike Greenslade said, ‘Australians continue to show generosity when disasters strike. When people are forced from their homes, it’s always humbling to see communities step up to support. The funds raised will help families affected
by disaster.’

Global support

Alongside its response in Nepal, ShelterBox is supporting families displaced by earthquakes in the Philippines and Venezuela.

It’s also responding to the world’s most neglected displacement crises, supporting people with shelter and other essential items in Cameroon, Ethiopia, Mozambique, and Burkina Faso.

ShelterBox, founded by Rotary, has supported more than 3 million people in around 100 countries.
