Old Ways <> New Ways will run until 7 November at the Elevator ARI in Lismore. Photo supplied

A group exhibition, Old Ways <> New Ways, is now open at Elevator ARI, 3 Rural Street, Lismore as part of The Returning’s Indigenous Artist Residency.

Curated by residency artist and mentor Kylie Caldwell, the exhibition introduces the 2026 cohort of the Bulaan Dalang Galii Naa Gan Ngaa Leen Duu Indigenous artist residency.

For Kylie, the exhibition creates an opportunity to recognise the resilience and continuity of local cultural systems.

‘Old Ways <> New Ways creates a space to celebrate enduring cultural systems, the cultural ways that have continued despite disruption, suppression, and attempted erasure. These are not static or fixed in the past, but living, evolving, and  adaptive systems of knowledge and practice.’

The artists explore ideas of knowledge, behaviour, culture, and ways of living through a lens of relational thinking, celebrating living cultural knowledge and contemporary artistry.

The 2026 artists are: Belle Budden, Dylan Bolt, Charlie Caldwell, Bernie Harada, Cherie Leon, Tania Marlowe, Hannah Ranby, Emily Roberts-Field, Shannon Smith, Leah Walke and Kay Lee Williams.

A program of public events runs until 7 November and will give audiences opportunities to engage and create with the Bulaan Dalang Galii Naa artists, including weaving, drawing and lino-printing workshops.
