As Australians head into another election season just as many parts of the east coast are recovering from ‘unprecedented’ flooding since February, and the national psyche is still reeling from the trauma of the ‘unprecedented’ Black Summer bushfires before that, it is critical now more than ever to vote according to your environmental conscience and fear for the future.

Buyuhyn-wana: The transformative persona brings together historical and spiritual objects from the collection of Robert Bleakley, and places them in context against contemporary screen-based works alluding to ideas of transformation. The character of this exhibition comes together with the scholarly but poetic visions of Bleakley and the highly esteemed Aboriginal curator, Djon Mundine.

Cye Wood performs Thursday 12 September from 6pm, weaving together 5 string octave viola, violin, 6-string ukulele and piano, creating a sonic architecture of hypnotic beauty. This instrumental, emotively charged performance provides a unique and richly evocative experience. Friday 4 October, from 6pm, Djon Mundine and Robert Bleakley speak about Buyuhyn-Wana: the transformative persona and the ideas explored through the exhibition.

Yuti McLean Pure Delight

Yuti McLean’s solo art exhibition in Byron’s Lone Goat Gallery begins 6pm this Thursday. Magic ingredients of this fascinating collection of Yuti’s paintings include gentleness, grace and mystique. The title piece Pure Delight was inspired by Gustav Klimt’s way of capturing the joy of a suspended moment. The Goddess of Honour was motivated from a book (found in the Mullumbimby library) of a pure angel among the wicked Scottish Border faeries. The Krishna Gondwanaland painting illuminates the meeting of the feminine aspect of Krishna with Miwi (aboriginal symbol of essence of soul). Goddess of Virtue depicts Yuti’s tracing of her ancestors; from Geraldis of Tuscany to  MacLeans of Scotland.

Discover this uniquely uplifting work at: Yuti McLean Fine Art (facebook). Opening Thursday 6pm at Lone Goat Gallery.

Storylines – Stop the rot and take action

Having spent a long time reflecting on the last 13 weeks since the floods devastated our region, many important issues have come to my attention – loss of homes, possessions, safety, schools suspended from flooding, chaos, death, loss of animals, extreme anxiety and desperation, and so much more.

Review of community response called for as challenges recognised

Local community members stepped forward to help coordinate and respond to the disaster; from people getting into boats and kayaks recusing strangers in Lismore to coordinating local response hubs in the hinterland and local towns. But it wasn't all a bed of roses.
