The Australian government’s commitment to act on the scourge of lethal ghost fishing nets has been welcomed by the Australian Marine Conservation Society and Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation.

An alliance of 27 environmental groups today welcomed the expansion of Australia’s Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve near Antarctica, but said the government of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had missed a rare opportunity to protect globally important feeding grounds for penguins, seals and albatross. 

The precariously low numbers of Maugean skates have reportedly stabilised, but the skate is still on the brink of extinction in its only home, Macquarie Harbour, the Australian Marine Conservation Society said after the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies released its second interim report on the Macquarie Harbour Maugean skate population.
