From a small office in Mullumbimby, a local conservation organisation is helping protect one of the most extraordinary places on Earth, more than 1,500 kilometres to the north. 

Over the last two-and-a-half years the Mullumbimby based Rainforest 4 Foundation has had a mission to buy back parts of the Daintree Lowland Rainforest that were subdivided for sale in the 1980s. 

In a recent conversation, with a dear friend, Gumilaroi educator Professor Bob Morgan, my spirit was lifted when he told me that after 50+ years of struggling for justice and equity for First Nations’ people in Australia and overseas that he remains ‘a prisoner of hope’ despite the glacial speed of progress and change.

In the 1980s, over 1,000 blocks of land were excluded from the Daintree National Park and World Heritage area. Since then not-profit organisations have been buying it back with the communities help.

Getting on board to save the Daintree can be a bloody good laugh especially with a virtual mix of local comedian Mandy Nolan, the HalfCut campaign and Comic Con.

As a passionate rainforest conservationist, Jimmy Halfcut wanted to get noticed by more people to make them aware of the fact that half the worlds rainforests have been destroyed by humans.
