Locals will be forbidden from lighting fires without a permit from this Friday (September 1), due to the commencement of the bush fire danger period.
In accordance with Section 82 of the Rural Fires Act 1997, the following areas will be covered by the prohibition:
Ballina Shire Council
Byron Shire Council
Kyogle Shire Council
Lismore City Council
Richmond Valley Council
Tweed Shire Council
Any person wishing to light a fire from 1 September 2023 will require a fire permit to light a fire until the Bush Fire Danger period is revoked.
Persons wishing to light a fire during this period are required to notify the NSW RFS and all adjoining neighbours 24 hours prior to lighting.
Failure to comply can result in fines under the Rural Fires Act 1997. Smoke regulations prohibit burning in some areas; contact your Council or local Fire Brigade for further information.
The requirement to notify your adjoining landowners and the Rural Fire Service 24 hours prior is a requirement all year round.
The fire permit is the additional during the Bush fire danger period
