Many felt they took a step back in time when they saw a full-size replica of one of maritime history’s greatest exploration vessels, a caravel, tied up at Ballina’s Lance Ferris Wharf on the weekend. Hundreds of people lined up to inspect the Notorious, a handcrafted recreation of a Spanish and Portuguese caravel that plied the seven seas between the 15th and 17th centuries. It was the first vessel of this type to have sailed Australian waters for more than 500 years. The caravel, owned, built and sailed by Graeme and Felicite Wylie of Victoria, visited the north coast as part of the Ballina Boat and Leisure Show at Fawcett Park, a major fundraiser for Marine Rescue Ballina.
