Tweed Seagulls Little Athletics have seen some fantastic records being broken over the past couple of weeks, including the following:

Curtis Marsden – U16 Boys (both Week 10 of competition) 1,500m run; 5:19:46. Curtis has broken his old record that he set earlier in the season of 5:22:59. Long jump; 5.65m. Curtis has broken the old record, which has been held since 2012.

Eva Pietraszkiewicz – U9 Girls (week 8 of competition) 50m sprint; 8.51 seconds. Eva has broken the old record, held since 2010, of 8.82 seconds.

Matthew Bollard – U9 Boys (week 8 of competition) 50m Sprint: 7.72 seconds. The old record of 8.21 seconds has been held since 2010 also.

Absent: James Mellor (U8 boys) – 50m sprint (week 8 of competition) ran 8.44 seconds, breaking another record held since 2010 of 8.52 seconds.

District Events: The District Fours commence Sunday, February 2.Kingscliff has three teams in the Open division being played at Condong and three teams in the Over 60s division being played at Cudgen. I am sure all teams would appreciate plenty of support.

Tweed Valley Shield: Round 3 will be played at Tugun on Monday February 3. Kingscliff will play South Tweed.

Wednesday January. 22: Only a few brave (or were we silly) mixed bowlers endured the heat and played in the competition which was “out of the hat”. Lucky winners were J. Seamer, B. Sprengel who def D. Gardiner, N. Gartner. Winners on the other rink were S. Woolford (swinger), M. Bertoli, J. Williams who def S. Woolford, W. Sprengel, G. Johnston.

Friday January 24: Weather cooler so a good roll up for the game which was “Highest margin”. This was won by J. Payne, C. Timewell, N. Gartner who def D. Gardiner, J. Seamer, G. Johnston; in other games M. Hosie, M. Farquhar, B. Sprengel narrowly def. A. Slater, F. Crowder, L. McGowran; J. Busch, J. Williams, M. James def P. Sullivan, M. Bertoli, M. McConville.

Monday January 20: Tweed Valley Shield – Pottsville teams played out very close scoring games but both grades were unlucky to go down to South Tweed Heads in Round 1. Monday 3 February – Round 3 will be at Tugun against Tugun teams.

Wednesday January 22: Denis Appleton, Ron Parker and Jim Banks were the days lucky winners with Ray Daunt, Bob Wilson and Trevor Wignall collecting the runners-up money. Saturday 25 January: Merv Brady, who is playing really well at present, and Ray Chandler with his reconditioned peepers, joined forces to take out the winners cash today. Ivor Sullivan and Ron Appleton were the worthy runners-up. Club Championship Fours – In an extremely close game Kev Hall, Jim Field, Doug Moir and Phil Bennett defeated Alan Meighan, Brian Pollard and Paul Earl by one shot. Well done, chaps.

Sunday January 26: Australia Day Shirts Vs. Skirts – The greens were full to overflowing for this annual fun event. The girls put up a great fight with several games going down to the wire. Nevertheless, the boys were able to maintain their yearly domination to once again come out victorious. Great to see Bill Stephen enjoy a few ends today after an absence due to a leg injury. Best shirts team was made up of Bob Wilson, Ron Appleton and Jim Field. Well done, guys.

Tweed Australia Day Achievement Awards were presented to Tony Halloran and Alan Meighan. Congratulations Tony and Alan on your richly deserved awards. Many thanks to Don Macdonald, Pottsville Delegate to the T.A.D.C. President Jim also had a very special award from the mens club for one of the members. Heartiest congratulations to Ronald George Parker who was named Clubman for 2013. Well done, Ron. (R.I.P.)

Thursday January 23: Social Bowls – A good roll up again this week. Winners (hws)l were Wendy Fielding, Jan Appleton and Robyn Booth. Runners-up (lwm) were Jenny Porter, Lorraine Rice and Carol Shaw. Well done, ladies. Raffles were won by Carol Shaw and Lil Bennett. Nancye Gleeson collected the lucky numbers prize again as well as being the days’ lucky bowler. Way to go, Nancye. The tinger linger award this week goes to the lovely Merle Jackson. Good one, Merle.

Sunday January 26: Australia Day Skirts Vs. Shirts. A super roll up for our Aussie Day celebrations. Following the raising of the flag at 9,15 am, the festivities began in spite of threatening skies. The cooking competition was a huge success. Roy Gleeson, one of our men bowlers, took out first prize with his beer permeated Damper and Aileen Swift collected first prize for her super Anzac Biscuits.

Out on the greens the ladies made life hard for the men with some really great bowling and tight scoring. Regrettably, the men had the upper hand but only by a very small margin overall. Best women’s team went to Dee Donges, Caryl Parker and Narelle Tait. Well done, girls. Tweed Australia Day Awards went to Coral Withers for her Achievement in Sports and Robyn Booth for her Contribution to Bowls. Congratulations ladies on your richly deserved awards. A big thank you goes to Don Macdonald, Pottsville Delegate to the T.A.D.C.

A Hemp Industry Development Plan has been announced by the NSW government, which promises 'to unlock new opportunities for NSW businesses and add value to the state's low-THC hemp industry, which is forecast to become a $100 million Australian industry by 2032'.
