Mandy Nolan’s Soapbox: Vagina-Maxxing

It’s a thing. It popped into my newsfeed as a story. I had to click. I mean, what new vagina fashion has come into play. Maxxing? Is this some new big vagina trend? Are our vaginas now not ‘big’ enough? Are we trying to create a spare room in our womb?

The Arts – June 2026

Solveig

Artist in Focus

Solveig

For Solveig, art has never been about fitting neatly inside categories. A lifelong painter, psychologist, curator, and creative force based in Mullumbimby, her work fuses the emotional resonance of Impressionism with a distinctly graphic sensibility she calls ‘graphic impressionism.’ Colour, movement, and light become tools not just of representation, but of feeling.

Born in Sydney in 1952, Solveig studied painting and sculpture at the National Art School during the height of Australia’s psychedelic era, absorbing the influence of artists such as Martin Sharp and John Olsen. Over decades of practice, motherhood, study, and self-reflection, her work evolved into a deeply intuitive exploration of nature, consciousness, and healing.

That belief in art as a healing force now extends beyond her own practice through the H’Art Gallery at Mullumbimby Comprehensive Health Centre, which she curates as a space showcasing Northern Rivers artists across painting, printmaking, and mixed media. Under Solveig’s guidance, the gallery has become an unexpected cultural hub — bringing contemporary local art into a public health setting where creativity, conversation, and wellbeing intersect.

Her own works in Exhibition 12 range from luminous botanicals to abstract neural landscapes, all carrying her signature interplay of colour vibration and layered form.

‘Art doesn’t just decorate a health centre,’ Solveig says, ‘It heals it.’

The Civilising Skirt

Black Fig Gallery

Black Fig Gallery has an exquisite treat in store for you in their upcoming show The Civilising Skirt, opening on 5 June.

Omie tapa, or beaten bark cloth, was there at the very beginning of time when the first woman on earth – Saja, created the very first wrap-around tapa skirt. After the Omie people of remote PNG ceased holding the very detailed tattooing sessions for initiating teenage boys into manhood, their tattoo motifs were transferred onto tapa. All of nature is on display in this exhibition from our nearest neighbour PNG.

Marvel at this rare and unusual offering, or book a private champagne floor–talk with Joan Winter from 4pm on Friday 5 June.
