Nerida Clarke, Byron Bay
There is no footpath on Paterson Street between Bangalow Road and Massinger Street. This street is used by pedestrians and joggers heading to and from Clarkes Beach and the lighthouse.
With more multi-residential developments in Paterson Street (and more to come), together with drivers taking this as a short cut to reach the beach and the other side of Byron centre, there has been a significant increase in the amount and speed of traffic. There is also increased parking on both sides of the street. Pedestrians are forced to walk on an uneven verge, particularly difficult with a pram, small children on bikes or for the elderly.
Paterson Street has a signpost stating ‘Local Traffic Only’, which is a nonsense with the volume of traffic using the street. I suspect it has become one of the busiest thoroughfares in Byron.
Our town supports a healthy lifestyle and therefore encourages walking and jogging, however, this cannot take place in an unsafe environment like this.
Council,if you monitor traffic, parked cars, and look at the state of the verge it will confirm the need for a pedestrian footpath.
