Byron High has an illustrious history of turning out amazing musicians. The Buckleys and Parkway Drive spring to mind.
In late November two bands from Byron High School went head-to-head to determine who would be the winner of the Battle of the Bands.
Year 12 student, Luca Greig, had a vision to hold a Battle of the Bands competition over five lunchtimes at the school.
‘Luca came up with the idea of showcasing Byron Bay High School’s musical talents,’ said Byron High School student and photographer Eva Avice.
‘Over the course of a few weeks different bands went head-to-head, and our esteemed judges, members of the music faculty, decided who were the winners of each heat.’
The final show took place at the PAC (Performance Arts Center) between bands Wild Rocket and Erin Woolsey.
‘The event was extremely packed as students of different years and teachers all came together to watch the two bands battle it out,’ said Eva.
Semi-finals
At the sem-finals Band Called Stereo members; Leo Laddin Catron (yr 12), Kiarn Stenner (yr 12), Floyd Whitaker (yr 10) and Cinnamon Laddin Catron (yr 10) performed two originals: ‘Cracked lips’ and ‘Pages’.
Wild Rocket members Zepha Breeze (yr 7) and Kai Akiapa (yr 7) performed three songs – Black Bat Liquorice, No more tears, and Seven nation army.
‘There were roaring cheers from the crowd and bright colourful spotlights – the atmosphere of the event was full of excitement. The audience was immensely enthusiastic, eager to hear more and speculating who the winners of the semi-finals were.’
At the whole school assembly, Luca announced that the winners of the 2022 Battle of the Bands were Wild Rocket.
