Our small cycling group is headed your way (20-24 March) to experience the newly-opened Northern Rivers Rail Trail and surrounding district. I am sure we are just the ‘tip of the iceberg’ for cycling tourism in the region. Our plans for cycling in the area start at Brunswick Heads for the Dorrigo, Urunga, and Bellingen Bicycle Users Group – BUG (dubbug.org.au).
Locals who we have contacted have said things like ‘Byron Shire is notorious for bad drivers, texting, road rage etc’, and ‘if you use Mullumbimby Road there is no verge for a bicycle, so your safety is at risk.’
Despite this we are looking forward to cycling through the region, staying and eating locally. We would like to provide encouragement for Byron Council to continue building a fantastic bicycle network.
